What happened: Lando Norris has applied for a Formula 2 license for his new racing outfit, LN4 Fusion, ahead of the championship's 2027-2029 selection cycle. Launched in early September after acquiring assets from AIX Racing, the team already holds a Formula 3 entry through the end of 2027 with drivers Gabriel Gomez and James Egozi.

Why it matters: Formula 2 CEO Bruno Michel confirmed the series will cap the grid at 22 cars to match the Formula 1 field and protect the financial stability of existing entrants. With multiple prospective teams competing for a fixed number of slots alongside the introduction of a new car, LN4 Fusion must displace or succeed an existing license holder to secure a place on the 2027 grid.

By the numbers: Formula 2 selects its teams on a three-year cycle covering the 2027, 2028, and 2029 seasons, maintaining a 22-driver cap. Norris currently sits sixth in the 2026 Formula 1 drivers' standings with 201 points.

What to watch: Formula 2 organizers expect to announce the selected teams for the 2027-2029 cycle within the next four to six weeks. On track, Norris heads to the United States Grand Prix in Austin from October 23-25.
