What happened: ESPN's Brian Windhorst reports that James has been contacting players across multiple contending franchises as his decision window narrows. Meanwhile, The Athletic's Dan Woike notes the Los Angeles Lakers intend to retain guard Bronny James rather than include him in any transaction tied to his father's next destination. The Miami Herald's Barry Jackson and Anthony Chiang report the Heat are exploring Klay Thompson and DeMar DeRozan to bolster their wing rotation.

Why it matters: Thompson is entering the final year of a contract owed $17.5 million, complicating potential trade calculations for a Miami roster operating with limited frontcourt depth around Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo. While Miami could structure a salary-matching proposal centered on Nikola Jovic's four-year, $64 million deal, the Dallas Mavericks remain hesitant to absorb long-term money without additional draft compensation. On the restricted free-agent market, Marc Stein reports the Denver Nuggets are demanding two first-round picks and two pick swaps for wing Peyton Watson, causing the La Clippers, Atlanta Hawks, and Milwaukee Bucks to balk despite available matching salary options involving Kyle Kuzma.

What to watch: If Dallas fails to secure a trade and opts to waive Thompson via a buyout, watch whether Miami shifts focus to secondary guard targets Russell Westbrook and Bradley Beal. Additionally, monitor impending formal meetings between James and front offices across the league as discussions escalate following his recent off-court sessions alongside Draymond Green.
