What happened: Veteran wide receiver and return specialist DeAndre Carter is signing with the Detroit Lions practice squad, per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. The addition follows Detroit's recent practice squad signing of rookie defensive lineman Jeffrey M'ba.

Why it matters: Carter gives the 4-3 Lions an experienced special teams option and receiving depth during the regular season. Practice squad flexibility allows Detroit to elevate him on game days without immediately clearing an active 53-man roster spot.

What to watch: Detroit will evaluate Carter in practice ahead of its upcoming regular-season slate as the front office continues to navigate the market before the NFL trade deadline.
