What happened: Manny Malhotra said the style he wants installed will require sustained work after the first preseason game in Seattle, with structure at the center of that build. Braeden Cootes also addressed the opener after scoring in his preseason debut.

Why it matters: Early exhibition games are where camp messages start getting tested at game speed, and those minutes already carry weight in roster decisions. That makes Malhotra's emphasis on structure more than camp language as preseason roles begin to sort themselves out.

What to watch: The next exhibition outings will show how quickly that structure translates from camp drills into live play. Cootes remains a player to watch as preseason opportunities continue.
