What happened: New York Islanders skaters stepped in after the whistle when the visiting Los Angeles Kings crowded Matthew Schaefer at UBS Arena. The third-period confrontation unfolded during Los Angeles' October road swing through Long Island.

Why it matters: Protecting their young blueliner has quickly become a non-negotiable standard for New York early in the 2026-27 regular season. The franchise featured the same Matthew Schaefer on the NHL Player Media Tour in September before his preseason scoring surge elevated expectations across Long Island.

What to watch: New York continues its October slate looking to set physical terms around its blue line, while Los Angeles moves on to the next stop of its road trip.
