Mercedes upgrade remains a question mark after Sepang aero overhaul

Both cars carried the new package, limiting comparisons

What happened: Mercedes brought a substantial aerodynamic package to the Bahrain Grand Prix weekend in Malaysia and ran it on both cars from the outset. Without an old-spec car in the mix, the team could not make direct back-to-back comparisons in identical conditions at Sepang, where Formula 1 had not raced since 2017.

Why it matters: That leaves Mercedes trying to judge a major development package without a clean control test on a weekend where setup swings can quickly change the order. The uncertainty matters because Mercedes brought new floor and sidepods to Sepang, making this the first live read on whether the overhaul sharpens or muddies its form.

By the numbers: Mercedes introduced seven upgrades for the Sepang weekend, including a new floor and sidepods. Its cars ran 2nd, 5th, 7th and 8th across Friday's sessions before the team led final practice on Saturday.

What to watch: Sunday's race should give Mercedes its first full-distance read on tire wear and balance with the new package. The key watch is whether the update holds pace over stints instead of only showing flashes in shorter runs.
