MLB labor deal expires Dec. 1 with salary cap unresolved

MLB has proposed a 154-game season from 2029.

What happened: The current agreement was signed in March 2022 after a 99-day lockout. MLB has also proposed seven-game Division Series and letting higher seeds choose playoff opponents beginning in 2027.

Why it matters: A lockout would halt trades and signings and bar players from team facilities. Owners say a salary cap would improve competitive balance, while union leadership disputes that rationale.

By the numbers: The 2026 final four ranked Nos. 2, 19, 28 and 30 in payroll. The No. 19 Brewers won the World Series.

What to watch: A new agreement before 11:59 p.m. ET on Dec. 1 could avert a lockout.
