What happened: Tapped on Sunday to start Game 5 of the ALCS, Parker Messick brings an arsenal complemented by sharp situational execution, including an inning-ending pickoff move. His full repertoire now faces its highest-leverage test of the 2026 postseason.

Why it matters: Taking the ball in a pivotal Championship Series matchup caps a steady ascent since his August rotation turns first drew national notice. How deep Messick works into the game will directly dictate bullpen workload for the remainder of the series.

By the numbers: Messick recorded six strikeouts early in his Oct. 3 postseason start.

What to watch: Messick takes the mound Sunday night with American League pennant stakes on the line.
