What happened: Real Madrid has officially appointed José Mourinho as head coach, marking his return to the Santiago Bernabéu. The club triggered a €15 million release clause to bring the manager back to Spain following his tenure at Benfica.

Why it matters: The appointment follows a trophy-less 2025-26 season that saw José Mourinho emerge as the top priority for recently re-elected president Florentino Pérez. Madrid finished eight points behind Barcelona in the domestic standings despite maintaining the league's most stout defense.

What to watch: Mourinho is expected to oversee a significant squad overhaul this summer to restore the club's European and domestic standing.
