What happened: Fabrizio Romano reports José Mourinho's return to Real Madrid is now advancing to the final stages, with talks described as productive and progressing well. Final approval from club president Florentino Pérez is still required and is likely to wait until the upcoming club elections. Benfica reportedly want Mourinho to stay but are aware of the ongoing Madrid talks.

Why it matters: A Mourinho return would mark one of the most dramatic managerial reunions in modern football, more than a decade after his first Madrid spell ended in 2013. The timing aligns with mounting Bernabéu unrest, including reports of fans whistling Kylian Mbappé, and signals Pérez is preparing a reset. For rival clubs, a confirmed appointment would reshape next-season across La Liga and the Champions League.

What to watch: Watch for the date of Real Madrid's presidential elections and any official statement from Pérez or Benfica. A formal announcement is unlikely before the election cycle resolves.
