What happened: The Los Angeles Lakers are attempting to offload the contracts of Jake LaRavia and Jarred Vanderbilt to complement a roster recently retooled around Luka Doncic. Concurrently, the Dallas Mavericks are actively shopping Klay Thompson and Daniel Gafford while the broader market waits for LeBron James to select his next franchise.

Why it matters: Moving Thompson or Gafford would clear significant salary for Dallas without requiring a contract buyout. The Lakers are similarly prioritizing financial flexibility, finding more trade traction with LaRavia's expiring deal than Vanderbilt's multi-year commitment. Philadelphia 76ers owner Josh Harris also held a private conversation with James as suitors continue their pitches.

What to watch: Expect James's imminent commitment to accelerate secondary free-agent signings across the league. Dallas and Los Angeles will continue canvassing the trade market for their available rotational players.
