What happened: Following a postseason exit, the San Diego Padres enter the offseason amid media speculation regarding their roster and farm system. Pundits have floated hypothetical trades sending Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, or Jackson Merrill to the New York Yankees, New York Mets, or Philadelphia Phillies.

Why it matters: Critics suggest the Padres' window is closing and question their financial flexibility moving forward. Changing this narrative will require ownership to back their words with investments to reach the postseason for a fourth consecutive year.

What to watch: In other action, Gavin Williams starts for the Cleveland Guardians against Sean Burke and the Chicago White Sox in Game 5. Yoshinobu Yamamoto will start Game 2 for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
