On the scene: The huddle breaks and Patriots practice is underway. Reserve DT Daquan Jones is not spotted, and as Mike Via @MikeReiss on X

What happened: Reserve defensive tackle Daquan Jones, who also missed a Sept. 24 session for personal reasons, was absent as the New England Patriots took the field for Wednesday's practice, per Mike Reiss. Following head coach Mike Vrabel's earlier update, New England did not designate center/guard Greg Van Roten (thigh) or safety Dell Pettus (ankle) to return from injured reserve.

Why it matters: Coming off a 30-24 road loss to the Chicago Bears on Oct. 22, the Patriots are managing interior line and secondary depth ahead of their Week 8 matchup in Miami. Holding off on activating Van Roten and Pettus preserves New England's five remaining injured reserve return elevations following Marcus Bryant's return.

By the numbers: Pettus, a third-year safety out of Troy, landed on injured reserve Sept. 23 after recording 20 tackles and 1 sack across 17 games for New England in 2025. Van Roten, in his 12th NFL season out of Pennsylvania, signed with the Patriots on Aug. 18 before going on injured reserve Sept. 29, while Jones joined in September on a deal worth up to $6 million.

What to watch: New England's official Wednesday injury report will clarify the reason for Jones' absence and set initial participation levels ahead of Week 8.
