What happened: New England moved offensive lineman Xavier Newman-Johnson and linebacker Benton Whitley from the practice squad to the active roster on Thursday after ruling out Alijah Vera-Tucker. Both practice-squad call-ups joined the Patriots in September and now step onto the game-day roster.

Why it matters: Placing Vera-Tucker on injured reserve sidelines the starting guard beyond Thursday's scheduled regular-season contest. Calling up Newman-Johnson supplies immediate interior offensive line depth, while Whitley adds linebacker reinforcement for the active lineup.

What to watch: With the scheduled Thursday night kickoff ahead, New England will rely on its adjusted interior protection and practice-squad elevations before addressing longer-term roster depth.
