What happened: The New England Patriots hosted free-agent linebacker Reid Williford for a tryout on Tuesday and signed linebacker Elias Neal to the practice squad. The transactions follow the departure of linebacker K.J. Britt to the Detroit Lions.

Why it matters: New England moved quickly to reinforce its linebacker depth after losing Britt from the practice squad. Neal brings regular-season experience to the defense, while Williford spent time with the Baltimore Ravens after completing his collegiate career.

What to watch: The 5-3 Patriots continue evaluating Williford as they finalize their practice squad rotation.
