What happened: Philadelphia appointed Fatse to lead its hitting program Tuesday alongside the hiring of Carlos Mendoza as third base and infield coach to succeed Bobby Dickerson. Fatse held the same position with Boston from 2022 until April 2026, when the Red Sox dismissed manager Alex Cora and four assistants following a 10-17 start.

Why it matters: The additions fill key vacancies under manager Don Mattingly, who recently agreed to a two-year return after guiding the club on a 79-55 run following a 9-19 opening stretch. Fatse takes over an offense planning to reduce J.T. Realmuto's catching workload in 2027 to preserve his production at the plate.

What to watch: With the coaching positions settled, Philadelphia shifts focus to an offseason roster agenda that includes multiple infield decisions.
