What happened: The Phillies are set to designate catcher Garrett Stubbs for assignment, per Scott Lauber. The move had not been announced as official when the report surfaced. Once it is, Philadelphia has seven days to trade him or place him on waivers.

Why it matters: The move thins the Phillies' catching depth as they sort out a backup behind J.T. Realmuto. They had recently been weighing Jake Rogers and Jonah Heim as backup catcher options.

What to watch: Watch for the Phillies' official announcement and whether Stubbs is traded or clears waivers within the seven-day window.
