What happened: The Raiders opened camp with Fernando Mendoza in reserve, leaving his route to 2026 game action dependent on developments ahead. The rookie quarterback is being evaluated during his first NFL training camp.

Why it matters: Las Vegas used the No. 1 overall pick on Mendoza, tying the franchise's long-term direction to his development. His first appearance would begin that transition under center.

What to watch: Training camp and preseason reps will provide the next measure of Mendoza's readiness. Regular-season circumstances will determine whether he plays in 2026.
