What happened: New York Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a right knee injury in Friday's 3-1 loss to the Washington Capitals. The 30-year-old jammed his skate into the post and collapsed into the net midway through the second period.

Why it matters: The injury removes the team's primary starter, who opened the year with a 1.76 goals-against average and a 3-1 record. With Shesterkin sidelined and veteran addition Joonas Korpisalo on injured reserve, New York must rely on 24-year-old Garand.

By the numbers: Shesterkin stopped 13 of 14 shots before exiting, while Garand made 11 saves on 12 shots in relief. Washington improved to 12-4 overall with the victory, dropping New York to 11-8.

What to watch: The Rangers are expected to recall another goaltender to the active roster to serve as the backup.
