What happened: New York Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin is out for the season after suffering a right knee injury in a game against the Washington Capitals. The 30-year-old jammed his skate into the post while scrambling to the net and was helped off the ice without putting weight on his leg. Dylan Garand took over in relief.

Why it matters: Losing their franchise pillar is a severe blow for the Rangers. New York finished last in the Eastern Conference last season when Shesterkin missed a month. Their goaltending depth is severely tested, as veteran backup Joonas Korpisalo was placed on injured reserve last week.

By the numbers: Shesterkin opened the season with a 3-1 record and a 1.76 goals-against average. Garand made 22 saves in a shutout at Detroit last week in his only other appearance this season.

What to watch: Garand projects to shoulder the starting load while Korpisalo remains week-to-week with a lower-body injury.
