What happened: Real Madrid have officially announced the signing of Marc Cucurella from Chelsea for €60 million. The Spanish international is the first major defensive acquisition for manager Jose Mourinho since his return to the Santiago Bernabéu this month.

Why it matters: The arrival of Cucurella signals a significant overhaul of a defensive unit that struggled during a trophy-less 2025-26 campaign. Mourinho is reportedly prioritizing tactical discipline, placing immediate pressure on existing starters as the club integrates new reinforcements.

What to watch: Cucurella is currently with the Spanish national team for the 2026 World Cup and will report to Madrid for pre-season training on July 13.
