Chiefs coach Andy Reid acknowledged Friday that Patrick Mahomes would not be likely to play in the team's preseason open Via @espn on X

What happened: Reid also remains uncertain about using Mahomes in the second or third preseason game. Kansas City opens its three-game preseason against Los Angeles on Aug. 15.

Why it matters: Mahomes was cleared for full practice in July after December surgery to repair torn ACL and LCL. Sitting him would separate medical clearance for camp from exposure in an exhibition game.

By the numbers: Mahomes has played in at least one preseason game in each of his first nine NFL seasons.

What to watch: Reid's decisions for the final two preseason games will determine whether Mahomes takes any live snaps before Week 1.
