What happened: Connor Hellebuyck went to New Jersey on Oct. 23 for Dawson Mercer, Nico Daws, Alexander Command, Nick Bjugstad and two draft picks. Buffalo pursued the 33-year-old Hart and Vezina winner since June. Buffalo discussed Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen before July 1 and later sought to swap the No. 4 pick from the Bowen Byram deal for No. 8.

Why it matters: Buffalo faces a slow start to 2026-27 with its crease settled on Luukkonen. Winnipeg targeted Swedish forward Viggo Bjorck at No. 8 and raised concern about Josh Norris and injury history. New Jersey added an elite starter while Buffalo must answer its goaltending from within.

By the numbers: Hellebuyck, 33, Hart and Vezina winner; traded Oct. 23. 4 via Byram trade; Winnipeg held No. 8 earmarked for Bjorck. Other names raised: Norris, Ryan Mcleod, Noah Ostlund, Konsta Helenius, Jack Quinn.

What to watch: Buffalo proceeds with Luukkonen as its goaltender. New Jersey integrates Hellebuyck into its early-season rotation.
