What happened: St. Louis City has signed Romanian midfielder Alex Matan, 26, on a free transfer, according to Tom Bogert. Matan won MLS Cup with the Columbus Crew in 2023.

Why it matters: Current St. Louis City head coach Yoann Damet was an assistant on that Crew title team, giving the club a direct line to a player he already coached. The move adds a proven winner to the midfield ahead of the second half of the 2026 MLS regular season.

By the numbers: Matan recorded 6 goals and 3 assists last season for Panetolikos.

What to watch: St. Louis City is expected to confirm registration details and a debut timeline for Matan.
