What happened: The Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly exploring trade scenarios for veteran defenseman Morgan Rielly following a disappointing 2025-26 season that saw the team miss the playoffs. Rielly, a cornerstone of the Leafs' blue line for over a decade, is facing scrutiny for his defensive play despite his continued effectiveness as a puck distributor. The San Jose Sharks and Edmonton Oilers have emerged as potential suitors, though Rielly’s full no-movement clause remains a significant hurdle in any potential deal.

Why it matters: The potential move signals a definitive shift in Toronto's strategy under new General Manager John Chayka, who is looking to rebuild a more stout defensive identity after firing head coach Craig Berube. Moving Rielly’s $7.5 million cap hit would provide the financial flexibility needed to address long-standing depth issues, but finding a partner willing to absorb the contract for a player coming off a -18 season will be challenging.

What to watch: Watch for developments leading up to the 2026 NHL Draft on June 26, where the Leafs may look to acquire picks or prospects in exchange for their long-time alternate captain.
