What happened: Stewards issued one-place grid penalties and one penalty point to both Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson following a second-session practice incident at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. Verstappen attempted an overtake heading into Turn 12 in the Foro Sol stadium section before Lawson defended the position, sending both cars side by side into the complex. Officials deemed the driving standards unacceptable and handed down matching sanctions ahead of Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix.

Why it matters: The grid drops alter starting positions for a race where track position in Mexico City's thin air remains critical for tire and engine cooling. For Lawson and Verstappen, the penalties also place both drivers one infraction closer to potential race-ban thresholds under the FIA points system.

What to watch: Final practice and qualifying take place Saturday to set the starting grid for Sunday's Grand Prix.
