What happened: The Houston Astros hired Randy Flores as their new general manager on Saturday. Flores, a former major league reliever, drafted Jordan Walker and Masyn Winn during his front-office tenure in St. Louis.

Why it matters: Flores takes over a Houston organization looking to reset after finishing 81-81 and missing the postseason. His background in amateur scouting provides Houston an opportunity to replenish a farm system thinned by years of postseason contention.

What to watch: Flores begins evaluating the major-league roster and coaching staff ahead of the upcoming winter meetings.
