What happened: The Chicago White Sox have officially promoted outfielder Braden Montgomery to the major league roster. Montgomery, 23, arrives on the South Side after tearing through the minor leagues to start the 2026 season, and he replaces veteran Austin Hays on the active roster. He was originally selected No. 12 overall by Boston in 2024 before being moved to Chicago in the Garrett Crochet trade.

Why it matters: Sitting just 1.5 games behind the Cleveland Guardians in the AL Central, Chicago is leaning into its youth movement to bolster a surprising postseason push. Montgomery's elite power and 113.9 mph maximum exit velocity provide a significant upgrade to a lineup looking for stability in the outfield. As the primary return for a former All-Star ace, his performance represents a high-stakes validation of the team's recent transactional strategy.

What to watch: Montgomery is expected to be in the starting lineup for the series opener against the Atlanta Braves.
