What happened: Browns head coach Todd Monken named Shedeur Sanders the starting quarterback for Week 9 against the New Orleans Saints. Watson, whom Monken picked as the starter ahead of Week 1, is dealing with a concussion. Monken confirmed that Sanders will start under center even if Watson is cleared to dress.

Why it matters: Cleveland sits at 5-3 in 2026 through eight games, but the offense has stalled under Watson, who has produced 1,806 passing yards and seven touchdowns. Sanders completed three of three passes for two yards in brief action this season and provides the offensive upside Cleveland requires. Reverting to Watson after a strong showing by Sanders would cap the Browns' ceiling in a competitive AFC race.
