What happened: Yahoo NFL identifies seven-year veteran free safety Antoine Winfield Jr. of the 2-5 Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a trade-deadline candidate for the 5-1 Buffalo Bills ahead of the Nov. 10 deadline. Using Syndicate32.com's trade machine with a fire-sale stipulation, the projected acquisition cost is a mid-second-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft. Winfield carries a $19.5 million salary for 2026 and a non-guaranteed $18.1 million base salary plus a $1.5 million roster bonus in 2027, with no guaranteed money remaining on his current contract.

Why it matters: Buffalo holds the No. 2 seed on a two-game winning streak, but safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson is on the reserve-suspended list and Jordan Hancock was placed on injured reserve Friday with a hamstring injury. Acquiring Winfield to patrol the deep third of the field would allow Cole Bishop to align closer to the line of scrimmage more often while providing a veteran mentor for Hancock and Jalon Kilgore. Because trading for Winfield after Week 9 leaves the acquiring club responsible for half of his 2026 base pay, Buffalo would likely seek a contract restructure that adds future guaranteed money to lower his immediate cap hit.

By the numbers: Winfield has logged more than 6,000 career snaps, including 620 in the postseason, aligning at free safety on 58.9% of plays, in the box on 29.4%, at slot corner on 7.6%, and on the defensive line on 3.8%. The 5-foot-9, 203-pound defender holds an 8.5% career missed-tackle rate alongside nine career interceptions. Entering Week 8, the 5-1 Bills hold the No. 2 conference seed, while the 2-5 Buccaneers sit 12th in the NFC with Winfield currently listed as questionable on the injury report.

What to watch: The NFL trade deadline arrives Nov. 10 following Week 9, giving Buffalo 15 days to weigh a move at safety alongside previously projected targets Amani Hooker and Brian Thomas Jr. Winfield's questionable injury designation and Tampa Bay's results over the next two weeks will dictate whether the Buccaneers entertain deadline offers.
