What happened: After acquiring defensive tackle DeForest Buckner on Tuesday, the San Francisco 49ers join the Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers as potential landing spots for Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr., who carries a 45% trade probability per ESPN. Arizona Cardinals edge rusher Josh Sweat holds a 40% trade probability in the second season of his four-year, $76 million contract as rival executives monitor whether the 2-5 Cardinals move him ahead of the Nov. 10 deadline. Indianapolis Colts cornerback Charvarius Ward, New York Jets receiver Garrett Wilson, Las Vegas Raiders pass rusher Maxx Crosby, and Khalil Mack have also surfaced in trade discussions for San Francisco.

Why it matters: San Francisco is weighing upgrades over wideouts Demarcus Robinson and Jordan Watkins while Robinson remains on injured reserve with an ankle injury and Mike Evans is listed as questionable with an Achilles issue, though both have a chance to return following the Week 8 bye. A vertical separator at 6-foot-3 and 209 pounds like Thomas or a full-tree route runner like Wilson would pair with Evans in the red zone more naturally than another smaller receiver such as Indianapolis wideout Josh Downs. Jacksonville sits fourth in the AFC at 4-2 despite Thomas seeing reduced playing time and targets behind Parker Washington and Jakobi Meyers, while the 2-5 Colts are on a three-game losing streak and have begun a roster sell-off with Downs requesting a trade.

By the numbers: Drafted 23rd overall in 2024, Brian Thomas Jr. recorded 87 receptions, nearly 1,300 yards, and 10 touchdowns as a rookie before posting 48 catches for 707 yards and two touchdowns across 14 games in 2025. Josh Sweat registered 12 sacks and 37 pressures for Arizona in 2025 but has been limited to two sacks and 10 pressures in 2026. In Indianapolis, ninth-year cornerback Charvarius Ward has allowed a 39.1% completion rate and zero touchdowns in 2026 after making 25 tackles in seven games in 2025, while Josh Downs has 26 receptions for 307 yards through seven games.

What to watch: San Francisco enters its Week 8 bye before facing the Las Vegas Raiders ahead of the Nov. 10 NFL trade deadline.
