What happened: The New York Yankees signed catcher Ali Sánchez to a Major League contract and selected him to the active roster on Saturday. The 29-year-old backstop was promoted from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to provide immediate depth behind the plate.

Why it matters: The move addresses a critical need for the New York Yankees, who placed Austin Wells on the 10-day injured list with cervical headaches. Sánchez offers a veteran defensive presence for a squad currently 0.5 games back in the AL East race.

What to watch: Sánchez is expected to be available for the upcoming series against the Red Sox. Wells will undergo further neurological testing during his time on the injured list.
