More about 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan planning to coach in his team’s preseason opener, via @nwagoner: https://t.co/8u9srOQ

What happened: Shanahan has worked on a limited basis during camp while recovering from a July 14 car crash. The planned return would restore him to game-day duties.

Why it matters: San Francisco opens the regular season Sept. 10 in Australia. Coaching in the preseason provides a checkpoint before that international opener.

By the numbers: The preseason opener falls 30 days after the crash and 28 days before San Francisco's regular-season opener.

What to watch: Watch whether Shanahan maintains his game-day role through the rest of the preseason and travels for the Sept. 10 opener.
