What happened: San Francisco released 14 players, including Eli Apple, Khalil Herbert, Deion Jones and Quinton Bell, and waived 19 others. Christian Kirk, Austen Pleasants, Brett Toth and Nick Zakelj went on injured reserve. Isaac Guerendo and Mykel Williams were placed on the reserve/PUP list.

Why it matters: The return designations preserve a path back for Kirk and Pleasants during the season. Guerendo and Williams will open the year on the PUP list.

By the numbers: 14 players released; 19 waived; four placed on injured reserve; two placed on reserve/PUP. Kirk and Pleasants were designated for return.

What to watch: Waiver claims and subsequent transactions will determine whether the initial roster holds before the opener.
