What happened: Shams Charania says James is expected to serve as the primary initiator and playmaker for a significant share of his minutes. The plan follows his move to Philadelphia on a two-year, $8 million contract with a player option.

Why it matters: Putting the offense in James' hands gives Philadelphia a central organizer for its revamped roster. The role would emphasize his playmaking as he enters his 24th NBA season.

What to watch: Training camp and the preseason will offer the first look at how frequently Philadelphia uses James at point guard.
