What happened: Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid said the club did its homework before adding the eight-time All-Pro kicker to the practice unit, per Nate Taylor. Reid added that starter Harrison Butker understands the business side of the roster move as he works through a recent slump.

Why it matters: Bringing in a proven veteran gives Andy Reid's Chiefs kicking insurance after scoring just three points in Sunday's 20-3 loss at Seattle. Sitting atop the conference at 5-1, Kansas City is shoring up special teams without immediately making a change on the active roster.

By the numbers: Kansas City holds the No. 1 seed at 5-1 despite a 20-3 defeat at the Seattle Seahawks on Oct. 25, while Tucker brings eight All-Pro selections to the practice squad.

What to watch: Butker will continue to take the majority of practice repetitions while Tucker works on the practice unit.
