What happened: Houston moved after a postseason exit left open offseason questions. The club had granted Espada permission to interview with the Mariners for their opening.

Why it matters: Espada's contract was set to expire at the end of October. A change now lets Houston run its own search while a division rival also shops for a manager.

What to watch: Houston now turns to its candidate list and a timeline for a successor.
