What happened: Cleveland waived Coats on Sept. 1, two days after he made the initial 53-man roster. The West Virginia product spent the 2026 preseason with the club.

Why it matters: The move keeps Coats in Cleveland’s secondary pipeline as the regular season begins. Practice-squad players can provide depth through game-day elevations or promotion to the active roster.

By the numbers: Coats is listed at 5-foot-9 and 184 pounds. He will wear No. 39.

What to watch: Watch whether Coats earns a game-day elevation or returns to the 53-man roster.
