What happened: Shane Steichen announced the depth-chart order Thursday after Richardson and Leonard competed throughout camp and the preseason. Steichen credited Richardson's development and said both young quarterbacks will work on consistency through scout-team reps.

Why it matters: The assignment gives Richardson a defined roster role after his offseason trade request failed to produce a deal. Indianapolis now carries a former first-round pick as its immediate insurance at quarterback.

What to watch: Scout-team work will show whether Richardson can turn Steichen's camp praise into a stable hold on the No. 2 job.
