What happened: Dallas framed the addition of Mike Pettine as support for first-time coordinator Christian Parker and his situational experience. Coaches familiar with Pettine countered that Dallas benefits the more responsibility he carries.

Why it matters: Dallas is trying to stabilize a defense that has struggled under a first-time play-caller. One former Pettine boss said the move settles the division race in Dallas's favor.

What to watch: Division games will show how much of the defense Pettine runs.
