What happened: Coach Brian Schottenheimer said TJ Bass will fill in at left guard. The reserve move would keep Smith out for at least the first four games.

Why it matters: Dallas opens the 2026 season without one of its top offensive linemen. Bass has worked with the first-team offense at left guard while Smith has been unavailable.

What to watch: Smith's recovery after surgery will determine whether he can return when the four-game minimum ends.
