What happened: During All-Star Media Day on MLB Network, Cristopher Sánchez discussed taking the mound for the National League on Tuesday. The left-hander emphasized the personal significance of opening the showcase before his home fans in Philadelphia.

Why it matters: The assignment marks the second All-Star selection for Sánchez, who also reached the top five all-time on the major league scoreless innings list earlier this season. His presence atop the rotation has helped steer Philadelphia to a 47-41 record entering the break.

By the numbers: The Phillies average 4.4 runs scored and 4.5 runs allowed per contest through 88 games this season. Philadelphia concluded its first-half schedule with a 5-0 final shutout victory over the Detroit Tigers, taking the matchup 2-1 after entering the game tied 1-1 in the series.

What to watch: The National League and American League rosters compete on Tuesday evening in the midsummer exhibition. When regular-season action resumes following the break, Philadelphia will attempt to extend its two-game winning streak.
