What happened: UFC CEO Dana White stated that lightweight champion Islam Makhachev verbally agreed to fight Carlos Prates at UFC 336 before changing his mind. White noted that the promotion's top stars have earned enough money to be selective regarding their fight dates.

Why it matters: With Makhachev off the card, the promotion elevated Carlos Prates and Michael Morales to headline UFC 336. The shift delays Makhachev's next lightweight title defense while creating an unexpected marquee opportunity in the welterweight division.

What to watch: UFC 336 takes place on Jan. 30 on Paramount+. Makhachev is expected to evaluate potential title defense dates later in 2026.
