Miami adds cornerback in late first round. Video

What happened: The Miami Dolphins chose cornerback Chris Johnson from San Diego State with the 27th overall pick in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft. The selection was reported by Adam Schefter. Johnson, a physical press corner, fills a need in Miami's secondary.

Why it matters: Dolphins ranked 22nd in pass defense during 2025 season, allowing 248 yards per game. This pick bolsters depth amid Jalen Ramsey injury concerns and supports Tua Tagovailoa's playoff push. Historically, late first-round CBs contribute immediately for contending teams.

By the numbers: Johnson 2025 college stats: 4 INT, 52 tackles, 8 PBUs. Dolphins 2025 pass def rank: 22nd (248 ypg). Pre-draft to go top 25 No notable injury history.

What to watch: Monitor Dolphins' second-round pick at No. 59 and Johnson's rookie contract details.
