What happened: Eliezer Alfonzo Jr.'s stepmother and sister were found dead following the earthquakes that struck Venezuela last week. The 26-year-old proceeded with his major league debut Sunday.

Why it matters: The game marked the culmination of a nine-season climb through the minor leagues under devastating circumstances. His family's deaths deepen the human toll of the earthquakes in Venezuela.

What to watch: Alfonzo's availability and role will remain secondary to his family's needs in the coming days.
