What happened: Florida State dismissed head football coach Mike Norvell on Sunday following Saturday's 36-24 home loss to Clemson. School president Richard McCullough announced the decision after meeting with department administrators and boosters, naming Rick Stockstill as interim head coach. The university owes Norvell a $50.3 million buyout under the terms of his contract extension.

Why it matters: The leadership change leaves Florida State seeking both a head coach and an athletic director after the university fired athletic director Michael Alford in September. Norvell went 2-10 in 2024 and 5-7 in 2025, failing to restore the program to national contention after dropping to 3-5 this season.

By the numbers: Norvell compiled a 10-22 record across his final three seasons at Florida State, going 2-10 in 2024, 5-7 in 2025, and 3-5 in 2026.

What to watch: Stockstill assumes interim duties as Florida State begins searches for both a head coach and a permanent athletic director.
