What happened: Former NBA guard Malik Beasley has reached a plea agreement with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York after initially pleading not guilty on July 1. Federal prosecutors indicted Beasley and former teammate Ed Davis in June on charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, bribery in sporting contests, honest services wire fraud conspiracy, and conspiracy to commit money laundering. The indictment alleges Beasley intentionally under- or overperformed relative to statistical thresholds during the 2023-24 season with the Milwaukee Bucks so.

Why it matters: Prosecutors state Beasley altered his on-court production to reduce or pay off debts owed to Davis, his former teammate on the 2020-21 Minnesota Timberwolves and with the Los Angeles Lakers, after accumulating millions of dollars in gambling losses. The June indictment cost the veteran guard a $42 million contract offer and marks a federal felony plea tied directly to NBA statistical manipulation.

By the numbers: Six defendants were charged in the federal investigation: Beasley, Davis, Paolo Zamorano, William Brown, Robert Gorodetsky, and Ernesto Plascencia. Prosecutors cited at least four 2023-24 Milwaukee Bucks games involving manipulated prop bets, and Brown has already pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud conspiracy.

What to watch: Co-defendants Gorodetsky and Plascencia are scheduled for change-of-plea hearings in November. Beasley is set to formally enter his guilty plea in federal court on Dec. 9.
