What happened: Gavi said Barcelona should not treat the Champions League as an obsession and called the club's season excellent in comments to Movistar relayed by Fabrizio Romano. The midfielder's remarks come after Barcelona's quarterfinal exit in Europe and ahead of Sunday's Clasico against Real Madrid.

Why it matters: The quote sets Barcelona's public tone after another missed Champions League run while the club still pushes to close out a strong domestic season. Barcelona entered May 10 leading La Liga and had already won the Supercopa, so Gavi's message is about patience and perspective rather than framing Europe as a crisis.

By the numbers: La Liga entering May 10 Clasico: Barcelona 79 points (26-1-4), Real Madrid 70 points (22-4-5). Recent results: Barcelona beat Osasuna 2-1 on May 2; Real Madrid beat Espanyol 2-0 on May 3. Head-to-head: Barcelona beat Real Madrid 3-2 in the Supercopa de Espana final on Jan. 11, 2026. Champions League: Atletico Madrid eliminated Barcelona 3-2 on aggregate in the quarterfinals on April 14, 2026.

What to watch: Watch whether Barcelona backs up that message in Sunday's Clasico, where a result against Real Madrid could further validate the season. The next key angle is how Hansi Flick's side finishes the campaign after the Champions League disappointment.
