What happened: San Francisco Giants play-by-play announcer Duane Kuiper announced Sunday he has been diagnosed with throat cancer and began treatment at Stanford Medicine. The team released a statement confirming this diagnosis is unrelated to the cancer he experienced five years ago. Kuiper will miss two midweek broadcasts to continue his medical care.

Why it matters: The diagnosis comes as his longtime broadcast partner, Mike Krukow, prepares to retire after the 2026 season. Kuiper emphasized his goal to return to the booth to celebrate Krukow's remarkable career during his final games. Kuiper previously underwent chemotherapy for an unrelated cancer in 2021.

By the numbers: San Francisco is 62-88 this season.

What to watch: Kuiper is scheduled to return to the broadcast Tuesday and will work the weekend series.
