What happened: The New York Yankees congratulated franchise legend Hideki Matsui on Friday following his appointment as manager of the Tokyo Giants.

Why it matters: Matsui steps into the managerial role with the Giants organization just 24 hours before the start of the 2026 MLB World Series. For New York, the recognition arrives during an active week that also saw general manager Brian Cashman agree to a new contract and outfielder Cody Bellinger capture his third Fielding Bible Award.

What to watch: Matsui begins his managerial chapter with Tokyo while the Yankees turn toward winter roster decisions after the World Series concludes.
